What does sewing mean to you? Is it the ability to repair your garments and other textile-based projects? Is it the means by which you feel you can best express your fashion style? Or is it just stress relief? Whatever sewing means to you, the point is that you sew!
In a world of fast fashion and ever rising costs for garments and other home decor, there has been a resurgence of people wishing to learn how to sew. And why not?! You can turn anything otherwise old and outdated into something new and fresh. This is nothing new, of course, previous generations were known to have recycled or upcycled clothing to conform to the new fashions of the times.
I've recently been enjoying teaching some basic courses at a local library workshop where I am bringing the joy of sewing to those that have never sewn and those that are refreshing their skills. It has been such an exciting and fulfilling experience seeing all my students finding that a simple straight stitch seam can do so much or how reading patterns is not as daunting as one once thought. The ages range from 13 to 99 and everyone seems to really find these short informative lessons fun and enlightening.
There have also been some ideas for future classes to be offered at the workshop like pattern drafting and recycling garments, tote bags, and basic tailoring techniques. I never would have thought a simple offer to teach a basic sewing class would expand into such interest. For that, I am humbled and truly excited to see where this goes. Come along the journey with me, won't you?
