Underneath it all

When you go to museum for a fashion exhibit, everyone usually ooh's and ah's at the costumes with little thought to whom created the mannequin or form upon which it is dressed. In one of my past lives I had that overlooked job; I was a museum costume mount maker.

Now I know what you're thinking, "say, don't you just pin it onto the mannequin like they do at XYZ department store?" Simply answered, no. You see, the difference between what you do in retail, pinning a garment to fit the mannequin, at the museum I made the mannequin to fit the garment. The idea is all about conservation, in keeping the garment as viable as possible for as long as possible. But how is it all accomplished? I recently posted with the Chicago History Museum to discuss just that.
